Household Tips

SOME EASIER WAYS TO COPE WITH HOUSEHOLD PROBLEMS.....

  • To remove rust stains on kitchen counter tops, wipe the area with lemon juice.
  • Place a few bay leaves in kitchen drawers to keep insects away.
  • Put ground lemon peels to remove bad odour from kitchen garbage disposal bin.
  • Pour boiling salt water to open up a choked kitchen sink.
  • Submerge lemon in hot water for 15minutes before squeezing to yield twice the amount of juice.
  • No more tears when you freeze onions for 5minutes before chopping them, or dip them in water for 10 minutes.
  • To get rid of any odours on your hands after chopping onions or garlic, rub moistened salt into them and then rinse with warm water and soap.
  • Brush little oil over the cheese grater before grating, so that the cheese will not stick to the grater.
  • Never boil coffee since boiling brings out the tannic acid in the beans and makes it bitter.
  • Add few teaspoons of oil while boiling lentils to help cook well and prevent any spill-over.
  • While refrigerating do not wrap foods containing natural acids, such as tomatoes, onions and lemons in aluminium foil because a chemical reaction caused by the combination of acid and the foil can affect the taste of food. Use a plastic wrap instead. Salty foods can cause the foil to rust.
  • To keep peppers fresh, remove the stalks and store.
  • Store spices in a cool, dry place since heat and light spoil them.
  • To remove the smell of cigarettes from the room, put half a teaspoon of baking powder in the ashtray or keep a cup of vinegar in the room to absorb the odour.
  • To remove oil stains, rub the area with a piece of lime dipped in salt, and then wash with soap.
  • To prevent garments from discoloring, soak the garments for 10minutes in salt water prior to washing. An  alternative is to add a few drops of vinegar to the wash cycle.
