Palakura Pappu Recipe



Ingredients:
  • Kandi Pappu/Toor Dal - 1 cup
  • Palakura/Spinach - 3 cups finely chopped
  • Green Chillies - 4 cut into length wise
  • Red Chilli/ Endu mirchi - 1
  • Garlic - 5 flakes
  • Curry leaves - 2 stems
  • Tamarind - 1tbsp soaked in water
  • Avalu/mustard seeds- 1tsp
  • Jeelakarra/cumin seeds- 1tsp
  • Turmeric powder - 1tsp
  • Oil - 3 tbsp
  • Water- 2cups

Method:
  • Wash kandi pappu thoroughly. Take pressure cooker and add kandi pappu, turmeric, 2cups of water and pressure cook it for 15minutes in low flame and keep it aside.
  • Heat oil in a pan. Add cumin seeds, mustard seeds, red chilli(endu mirchi) and allow it to splutter.
  • Add green chillies, garlic, curry leaves and fry for 5mintues.
  • Add chopped spinach/palakura and cook for 15 to 20minutes or until spinach is well cooked.
  • Now add cooked kandi pappu, soaked tamarind and mix well with spinach and cook it for 15mintues in a low flame.
  • Add salt and  few water if required. 
  • Serve hot with rice and ghee or with rotis. 

This is one version of making palakura pappu which takes time. The other version is very simple and it takes less time. But the taste differs.
  • Take pressure cooker and add kandi pappu/toor dal, chopped spinach leaves(palakura), garlic, turmeric, green chillies, soaked tamarind, curry leaves, water and pressure cook it for 15minutes in a low flame.
  • Once the dal is cooked heat oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds, cumin seeds and red chilli. Allow it to splutter.
  • Now add the cooked dal and salt to this and mix well and cook for 10mintues in low flame.
